A Day in the Life

Provide deep technical subject matter expertise in specific areas as required by the D/S&T. Tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Providing substantive technical leadership for horizon scanning, in-depth studies, road-mapping efforts, risk/benefit analysis, and other related research and development activities;
  • Writing technical assessments that inform S&T decision makers and help guide development of S&T investment policy.

Qualified Candidate

  • Doctorate degree in social or behavioral sciences.
  • Ten or more years of experience in social/behavioral sciences or related field.
  • Deep technical expertise as evidenced by a substantial corpus of completed work (e.g., reports, publications, workshops, panels) in social or behavioral sciences.
  • Knowledge of national security requirements for social and behavioral sciences.
  • Superb communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and problem-solving skills as demonstrated by successful past interactions with elite technical advisory groups (e.g., National Academies, JASONs, Defense Science Board).
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, leading, and completing multifaceted projects with many stakeholders who sometimes have competing equities.

Exceptional Candidate

  • Experience with National Academies Decadal Surveys or similar national efforts to assess progress, identify opportunities, and specify approaches to advance a particular field of research (e.g., social science, earth science, space exploration).
  • Working knowledge of the IC’s structure and IC member organizations’ roles and capabilities regarding analysis, collection, and core enabling functions (information sharing, technology, etc.).
  • Experience producing intelligence analysis and/or formulating US policies.
