A Day in the Life

Support the objectives of FM to find creative solutions for the improved collection, organization, storage, management, retrieval, and use of financial data from across the enterprise to make more effective and transparent resource decisions. This includes supporting the offices by working within FM’s data strategy to better enable and prepare our data to meet internal and external deliverables while providing the expertise to help provide input and guidance towards automation efforts, the Master Data Management Program, Integrated FM Data System Architecture, and Data Governance activities. Data scientists will work to mine data, create foundational analysis, manage and organize multivariate data through statistical programming languages such as SAS, SQL, R, SPSS, Python, and R, and tell stories/ reveal insights with data.

Duties Include:

  • Developing and implementing solutions to financial data management challenges using advanced programming language skills as well as Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Structured Query Language (SQL), SQL Server, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel technologies.
  • Understanding financial management processes, software, applications, tools, and systems with a vision toward process improvement.
  • Data mining using state-of-the-art methods.
  • Extending FM’s data with sources of information from other areas of the enterprise when needed.
  • Processing, cleansing, and verifying the integrity of data used for analysis.
  • Developing ideas for automated anomaly detection and correction systems.
  • Organizing and “wrangling” large datasets from multiple financial systems to develop actionable insights from them.
  • Creating meaningful data visualizations that communicate findings and potential for business impact to key decision makers.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python/R.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau and/or Qlik.
  • Keeping up-to-date with latest technology trends.
  • Acting as a data advisor in such areas as data system architectures, data governance, and developing a master data management program.

Qualified Candidate

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Applied Math, Economics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science or other quantitative field; or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated specialized experience in data analysis, including the ability to analyze data, identify trends, generate reports, merge data, and supplement data sources using automated reporting applications.

 

Exceptional Candidate

Desired:

  • Master’s degree in Applied Math, Economics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science or other quantitative field.
  • Demonstrated specialized experience with data processing, database programming, and data analytics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data mining and statistical analysis.
  • Demonstrated specialized experience using query languages such as SQL.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of machine learning techniques and algorithms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in Microsoft Office tools.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DoD, IC, or other government agency programs, budgetary or finance processes.
